Bacon Strip - 9/3/11 : Seattle's Re-Bar hosts "Bacon Strip" once a month, and this month's theme was sci-fi. So Critter came up with an outfit featuring glowy stars and rings (he named her Areola Borealis). My idea was pretty last-minute. I decided to be Ripley's (much) older sister Nipley, who's a little bitter. So I got out my plush alien facehugger and we were off!

Barry's 40th Birthday in Vegas - 8/11 : What I thought would be a routine visit to Vegas with my partner ended up being a hell of a birthday surprise, with 11 friends and 2 parents dropping in to join the fun. He masterminded the whole thing weeks before, and everyone kept it quiet right up until that moment when Dom came marching into our hotel room with a huge smile on her face. We had a hell of a good time in downtown Vegas drinking, lounging by the pool, stuffing our faces, gambling, and lots of napping. You know, like we old folks do... Also caught a fantastic show called Absinthe and had dinner at our favorite tapas restaurant (Firefly). It was a wonderful weekend and I'll never forget it.

Venice - Sept 21-22 : (Click links for more info.) Critter and I had a wonderful cruise with his aunt Patty and her friend Lynn. Our ship was the Aegean Odyssey, a smallish one built for a max of 350 people. The median passenger age was 69, so we were among the youngest on board...which was fine with us, since that meant there were no screaming kids running around! Our first stop was in Venice, Italy. We had the first day to goof off on our own, then we had a "highlights" tour which included the Rialto and Ghetto Nuovo (Venetian Ghetto). Later that night, we were given an exclusive tour of St. Mark's Basilica, which is normally closed to the public at night. Fantastic! Also, the food carvings you see were displayed on the ship during mealtimes...I was so smitten with them I had to get a shot of each one as they appeared throughout the trip. :)

Zadar - Sept 23 : (Click links for more info.) Next we were off to Croatia's Dalmatian Islands, stopping first in Zadar. We mostly toured cathedrals there, including St. Mary's Church which has a treasury containing holy relics of saints (body parts encased in gold) and even a bit of Jesus' cross, allegedly. Many towns all over Europe claim to have a bit of THE cross in their cathedrals, so I'm highly skeptical. (No photos were allowed, of course.) The town's dock area had some interesting features, such as a gigantic solar-powered light display built into the pavement and a set of holes in the pavement that play musical tones when the waves hit connecting tubes down by the water.

Split - Sept 24 : (Click links for more info.) Continuing through the Dalmatian Islands, we next landed on Split. This is a lovely little town, rich with history and the final resting place of Diocletian, the only Roman emperor to actually retire from politics. His retirement palace was built here. Today it's mostly in ruins but much of the walls (and some columns) are still standing. On this day I was dealing with the flu and a fever (caught in Venice) so I didn't do the excursion tour, but later in the afternoon I went out with Critter and got to see the town for myself. Somehow I had the energy to climb the bell tower, which was VERY scary since the stone stairs were nearly two feet high and the stairwell was extremely narrow.

Korcula & Hvar - Sept 25 : (Click links for more info.) Our next Croatian island stop was Korčula, a beautiful little town that we'd love to visit again. It's laid out in "fishbone" fashion, with a main street winding around the island and side streets branching off from there. We toured a cathedral and a couple of museums, as well as what locals claim to be Marco Polo's birthplace. Our tour guide, however, made the caveat that there is no proof he was born in that house, but his relatives still live in Korčula so it's possible he lived there for a time. (She was quick to point out that most tour guides won't tell you that.) Later that afternoon we visited nearby Hvar via tendered boat, but unfortunately it appeared to be a party town which only came to life at night, so while it was quaint and had stuff to see, everything was closed and there were no tours to show us what was what. The last 5 photos in this group are from Hvar.

Dubrovnik - Sept 26-27 : (Click links for more info.) One of the highlights of our cruise was our two-day visit to the formerly war-torn (and still badly damaged) Dubrovnik. We toured much of the Old City, including a cathedral or two, but for me the best part was walking along the ancient city walls. This we did all on the first day. The morning of the second day, we took a lift up to the top of the mountain Srđ, which gave us a panoramic view of the entire area, which was pretty stunning. Also at the top of the mountain is an old military fortress in which they have installed a museum dedicated to what they call The Aggression, or the siege of Dubrovnik by the Serbians. It was such an outrageous and evil thing that happened to the city, just unbelievable.

Corfu - Sept 28 : (Click links for more info.) Moving out of Croatia and into Greece, our first stop was the island of Corfu. Here we toured the Church of Agios Spyridon (which has an impossibly huge wooden roof with no support columns), Panaghia Spiliotissa (the town basilica), and the Archaeological Museum. Then we were turned loose to explore the town a bit, where we discovered that one of Corfu's top exports is the kumquat. Most notably they sell kumquat liqueur, found in shops which sell almost nothing but. We left with three bottles of it.

Olympia - Sept 29 : (Click links for more info.) Next we visited Olympia, where we toured the vast archaeological site containing relics of monuments, temples, and even old bath houses. We then moved on to visit the Olympia Stadium, the site of the original Olympic games. Even if the stadium isn't much to look at, you get a sense of walking through history all the same. I get this feeling almost anywhere in Europe, but it was especially strong here. Our tour concluded with a walk through the nearby museum where we could see beautiful, if damaged, artifacts rescued from the site. Finally, before re-boarding we stopped at a duty-free shop and I got some great photos of cigarette packages with horrific health messages on them. I got a few good shots before the clerk put an end to my snapping...

Epidaurus - Sept 30 : (Click links for more info.) Our next stop was Epidaurus, home of Apollo's son Asclepius the healer. We made a quick stop in the museum, but the highlight of our visit was the theatre, which is famous for is incredible acoustics. Performances are still given in this theatre... You can hear very minute sounds made from the center, so I can only imagine what music sounds like from there.

Going Home - Oct 2 : Some misc. shots of us on our way home from Athens. Due to an air traffic controller strike in Athens, we ended up (after several hours of standing in lines) flying to Munich but missing our connection to Chicago/Seattle. We then flew from Munich to Frankfurt, where we spent the night and flew direct to Seattle the next morning. There were a LOT of unhappy passengers dealing with the aftermath of the strike, let me tell you... But we were nice and I think it paid off.

Cashel - March 25 : We spent a day in the cute little town of Cashel, where we explored the Rock of Cashel ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_of_cashel) and the nearby Hore Abbey ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hore_Abbey). We stayed in a 200-year-old barn which had been converted into a spiffy bed & breakfast ( http://www.cashel-lodge.com), which was the perfect setup because we were able to go buy food in the town and bring it back to cook at the lodge.

Dingle Peninsula Tour - March 28 : Our visit to the Dingle Peninsula ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dingle_Peninsula) was certainly the bit we enjoyed most during the trip. We stayed at the excellent Castlewood House ( http://www.castlewooddingle.com) and took a day trip exploring the peninsula guided by Denis Ryan ( http://www.dingletours.com). He basically drove us around in his car and gave us plenty of historical and cultural chat. It was by far the best way to experience this place. We hope to go back and stay longer!

Aran Islands (Inis Mor) - March 31 : From Galway we made a day trip by ferry to Inishmore (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inis_Mor), which was fascinating. The main attraction there is the Iron Age fort Dún Aenghus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D%C3%BAn_Aengus), which still looks as if it were built a couple hundred years ago instead a couple thousand. Our tour guide basically just drove us from point to point in his minivan, stopping at interesting things and yelling out historic facts & figures. He was quite a character, and I managed to grab his business card in case we ever came back or if we wanted to recommend others.

Las Vegas - Christmas 2010 : Las Vegas for Christmas, baby!! Critter got us a GINORMOUS room for the special occasion, as you can see. We drank, stuffed our faces with tapas, took long baths in the hot tub, boiled ourselves in the steam bath, saw Penn & Teller perform, and generally had a damn good time. Best Christmas ever!

Halloween! : Fun night at The Cuff, both of us dressed like German beer girls. He was the pretty one with nice hair and makeup, I was the dumpy, drunk one who obviously had makeup issues! I had a blast getting into character, staggering around and shouting drunken slurs with a German accent. I had a fake mug of beer as a prop, which was a bit heavy but looked real (it almost fooled the doorman). There were some awesome costumes there as well, I tried to get photos of them all but I missed a few (like Cruella DeVille, with her coat covered in Dalmatians).

Disneyland - 7/10 : A bunch of us flew down to Anaheim to celebrate Gina's 30th birthday at Disneyland. I haven't been there since I was a kid and I wasn't sure what to expect, but I have to say it was a lot of fun. We spent 3 days there, going full-on from 8am till midnight going on every ride we could get to. We rode a lot of them late at night before the part closed, which is when most of the people had left, and that worked out great. All in all a bitchin' trip! Gina's photos are here.

Douchebags of Grindr : 4/19/10 - I'm endlessly entertained by Grindr, an iPhone app for gay guys. It's meant to help guys hook up (or "make new friends", wink-wink) but I just get on there for shits & giggles because it's really a douchebag goldmine. It cracks me up to see some of these guys puffing themselves up to look as cool/hot/alluring/sexay as possible. Of course some guys are really into that, but I just find it hilarious. Sept. 4 - Arrival in Wackernheim : After a 9-hour flight we arrived in Frankfurt, then picked up our rental car and drove to Wackernheim, the little town where Critter's family lives. We had to try and stay awake all day so our sleep cycles would get back on track, which was VERY difficult especially since we were being offered wine and sugary snacks. But our rooms at the bed & breakfast ( http://www.landgasthofkirschgarten.de) were really nice and comfy, and the lady who runs it gets top marks in our book. She presented an enormous breakfast each morning and was always sweet and helpful. The only negative was staying next to a church where the bells ring on the hour...but earplugs solved that problem!

Sept. 5 - Rhein, Ruedesheim, Mainz : Today we took a drive along the Rhein River and did a little sightseeing. We walked around the outside of Schoenburg Castle ( http://www.hotel-schoenburg.com), took a stroll through St. Goar ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sankt_Goar), and finally ended up at Ruedesheim ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudesheim_am_Rhein) where we rode the incline up to see a view of the Rhein River Valley as well as the Niederwalddenkmal monument ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niederwalddenkmal). Afterwards we grabbed some food (schnitzel!) and drove to Mainz for a little tour, visiting the Mainz Cathedral ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mainzer_Dom) and just farting around in general. Later we had dinner and drinks (lots of them) with Critter's brother, aunt, uncle, and cousins. It was a rowdy, good time.

Sept. 6 - Wackernheimer Wald : This was a laid-back day, starting with a long walk through the forest and vineyards around Wackernheim. It was also Critter's Oma's 83rd birthday so there was a lot of family over to visit, and a lot of good food and booze to be had. Critter's uncle Herman took us on a side trip to his house so he could give us some locally-made wine and wineschnapps, so our suitcases were a lot heavier the next day.

Sept. 7 - Arrival in Munich : We caught an early afternoon train from Frankfurt to Munich, and that was a four-hour trip so we just kicked back and watched movies and snoozed. Once we got settled into our hotel, we ventured out for dinner. We ended up at a nice place which had a beer garden out in back...Gina and I had roast pork with potato dumplings and salad, and Critter had schnitzel. We all had a couple of glasses of tasty Munich beer, which really hit the spot. Afterwards we mostly just walked around, shopping a little and getting some dessert, before heading back to the hotel.

Sept. 8 - Nymphenburg Castle Park : This morning Critter and I headed out on our own for a walk, as Gina had had a bad night on a crappy bed and needed to sleep a bit more. A short distance away was Nymphenburg Castle Park ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nymphenburg_Palace) which was beautiful, filled with sculptures and fountains and swans. It's amazing what these kings did with their money! We saved the castle tour for the next day.

Sept. 8 - Dachau Concentration Camp : Around noon we took a train to Dachau and then a taxi over to the concentration camp ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dachau_concentration_camp). We had planned to do this because none of us had ever been to such a place, and we felt it important that we do so sometime in our lives. It's the kind of place I've always heard and read about and seen photos of, but being there and seeing it really drives home the reality of what happened. The ruthless order and efficiency of its past operations is chilling to say the least... Our self-guided audio tour had plenty of information and interviews of survivors, and throughout the tour (and our trip through the camp's extensive museum) I was suddenly ashamed that my own species is capable of such things. Where I really began to choke up is in the area of the museum displaying memorial plaques and artworks donated from around the world--this was my species expressing anguish for the victims and apologizing for what had been done. Sept. 8 - Dinner and Hofbräuhaus : After we left the Dachau concentration camp we discovered we were famished, so we stopped for Doener Kebabs ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doner_kebab), feeling somewhat guilty for stuffing our faces after such depressing sights. But God, they were good. Later that evening we took a little nap and then headed into downtown Munich again to the Hofbräuhaus ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hofbrauhaus). It was crazy, packed with folks drinkin' and singin' and drinkin'. We each had three of those giant glasses of beer, which comes to about 7 pints I think. We were VERY toasted. At one point we moved from the beer garden to a table inside, and ended up chatting with a guy who was a transplant from New Hampshire. He was with two girls, one of whom actually worked at the Hofbräuhaus for a short time. It was a lot of fun, much more so than our trip to the one in Las Vegas a month later.

Sept. 9 - Nymphenburg Palace, Downtown, Bavarian Platter : After sleeping off the previous night's hangover, we took another stroll through Nymphenburg Castle Park and had lunch at the restaurant there. Then we toured the palace, which was as extravagant and gaudy as expected ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nymphenburg_Palace). I took quite a few shots of the interior, careful not to touch anything. Except for when I moved a curtain one inch so I could see outside--I was hounded by one of their goons who first scolded me and then followed us around for the next 10 minutes. Sheesh. After the tour we headed back into downtown Munich for some light shopping. We found a restaurant that was still open, and saw an item on the menu called "Bavarian Platter." We had NO IDEA it was going to contain so much food... The photos will show you what we were up against. And yet, we managed to eat most of it plus beer. Yay us!

Sept. 10 - Train to Prague & First Night : A few more hours on the train brought us to Prague at last. Again, we had the train cabin to ourselves--nice! We arrived in the late afternoon so we didn't have much time to do much, but we managed to get to our hotel and find a place to eat. Afterwards we took a walk along the river and across the famous Charles Bridge ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Bridge), which was just as busy at night as we expected it to be in the daytime. Amazing! Critter and Gina went out to find a place to get a drink and I stayed in the hotel to do some laundry in the sink. I got a little carried away, though, and ended up doing more than I had room to hang. Whoops.

Sept. 12 - Kutná Hora, Sedlec Bone Church : Today, after wandering from station to station trying to find the train, we took a ride out to a little town called Kutná Hora ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kutna_Hora). There we toured the Sedlec Bone Church ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sedlec_Ossuary), which has been decorated with thousands of bones. The photos pretty much speak for themselves...it's truly a unique thing and I'm glad we made the trip!

Sept. 12 - Misc. Prague : After coming back from the Bone Church we took a walk through the Jewish Quarter ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josefov) before settling down for some dinner on a street crammed with tourists...not a quiet meal but it was pretty damn tasty. Later, Gina wasn't feeling well so Critter and I headed out in search of an absinthe bar. Turns out there was one literally around the corner from our hotel, it was called Absinthe Time ( http://www.absinthe-time.cz/czech). This was our first taste of the stuff, and I have to say it wasn't bad at all. The bartender was helpful, preparing it the traditional way (with flame and sugar). We followed those up with some on ice, which was far stronger with the anise taste but still interesting.

Sept. 13 - Clock Tower View, River Cruise, Misc. : This morning we walked up the Old Town Hall Tower for a panoramic view of the area, it was incredible. The clouds were passing by, making the light shift every couple of minutes. Beneath the tower, tourists can get a glimpse of the sewage system (and all that's flowing through it), which is something we sort of walked into without knowing what we were doing. We then had a pizza lunch in the market square and took a boat trip around the river to see the sights. Afterwards we went back to the hotel for a two-hour siesta, and since Gina wasn't feeling well, Critter and I ventured out to find something good for dinner. We found a cute little restaurant called Příčný řez ( http://www.pricnyrez.cz/en) in some little neighborhood we hadn't been in before. What a find! The food was excellent—I had chicken with pears, camembert cheese, and cranberry sauce, Critter had some sort of chicken with pasta, we both had sangria to drink.

Sept. 14 - National Museum, Absinthe Night : It's easy to lose track of what day it is on long vacations. Case in point: we all thought we were leave Prague today, and we had gotten all the way down to the lobby to check out before realizing that we still had one more day! And since it was rainy and dreary outside, we spent a good deal of time touring the National Museum which was excellent--it has many, many rooms dedicated to anthropology, archaeology, zoology, mineralogy, and other subjects. Afterwards we took a short nap before heading down to the hotel's bar to check email. The bartender was charming and attentive, proudly declaring that since he had gone to Hotel School, he could prepare any drink we wanted. We had a couple of Cosmos and then headed to dinner at Příčný řez again, bringing Gina with us. Later, Critter and I stopped at the hotel bar again for what they advertised as Absinthe Night, and our bartender fixed us four shooters (each) which were set on fire and sucked down quickly with a straw. He then fixed us each a couple of absinthe martinis which were great...by that time we were very toasty so we thanked him (leaving a huge tip) and headed for bed.

Sept. 15 - Train to Berlin, First Evening : Took the train to Berlin today, it was a four-hour ride and we had the cabin all to ourselves just like when going to Prague. It was a mess in Berlin though, because all the central-city S-Bahns weren't running so we spent about 30 minutes walking all over the Hauptbahnhof trying to figure out what the hell was going on. Finally Critter found a train for us which took us right to the stop next to our hotel in Alexanderplatz. After settling in a bit and getting a shower, we all headed to Potsdamerplatz to have dinner at this touristy place that Critter and I discovered last time we were here, they serve this pasta dish which is incredibly good. Next we wandered over to Sony Centre and sat down for fruity drinks and dessert before heading back to the hotel. Critter and I just did some laundry in the sink in this tiny little room and it was quite an experience...

Sept. 16 - Jewish Museum, Holocaust Memorial : Today we toured the Jewish Museum ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish_Museum_Berlin) which was pretty incredible. It houses a vast amount of info and exhibits about Jewish history and culture, and the architecture was pretty amazing to boot. There are “spaces” in the museum which evoke feelings of isolation and confusion, all open to interpretation of course. Later that evening we walked to the Holocaust Memorial ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memorial_to_the_Murdered_Jews_of_Europe) which is another abstract sort of thing which affects people in different ways... To me it makes one feel isolated and uncertain, as if the memorial itself was going to swallow me up.

Sept. 16 - Misc. Berlin : After leaving the Jewish Museum we stopped by a little restaurant close to the Brandenburg Gate and had some currywurst and schnitzel, then headed over to the Gate to see it up close. We then walked over to see the Homosexual Memorial ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memorial_to_Homosexuals_persecuted_under_Nazism), which is basically a big slab of stone with a video playing inside, seen a little window. It's a black-and-white video of two men kissing in slow motion. I found it kind of a tasteless letdown, a tacky way to honor the gays and lesbians who were killed and persecuted for being themselves. After going back to the hotel and napping a while, we headed to another part of town to seek out a nice bar or club for drinks. We didn't find any...seems that nobody in Berlin goes out on weekdays because all the bars had only 2 or 3 people in them, if any at all. We did find one place which was quite nice (Xion I think it was called) and we stopped there for a late-night snack and some beers. We then called it a night, not finding any other decent places for drinks.

Sept. 17 - Misc. Berlin, Qi Show : After the zoo we took a which look inside the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, then headed back to the hotel for a nap and dinner before going ot the show "Qi", billed as an astonishing performance for the ages. So after rushing like mad to gobble our delicious Indian food down, we sat down and prepared ourselves for what we suspected would be an "interesting" show. It was every bit as craptastic as we expected, and more. I have never experienced such levels of cheese in my life! Awkward dance numbers with stiff, choreographically-challenged dancers of radically varying heights, badly-sung songs by an overblown diva, schlocky ballads whilst ice skating...it was all there, and many times I thought I was going to burst out laughing. The phrase that kept coming to mind while watching all this was "poor man's Cirque du Soleil." Sept. 18 - Last Night in Berlin : This was our last day of vacation. None of us hadmuch energy, and I woke up to the sounds of people bungee jumping off our hotel roof...I could hear them shrieking all the way down. So we did a little shopping, and then I came back to the hotel for a snooze since I was coming down with a cold and sneezing every five minutes. Critter and Gina did some more shopping across town, and later we went out for a little walk and dinner. Finally we came back and started to pack. Sigh...another awesome vacation comes to a close!

Steilacoom - 7/18/09 : It was a nice, warm day and Amy suggested we go down to Steilacoom to visit Critter's aunt Patty, so we loaded up the car and headed down there, taking Saffy along so she could play on the beach. Beer Festival - 6-20-09 : Critter, Amy, and I spent a few hours at the Beer Festival in St. Edwards Park. We were joined by Joelle, Dave, Carrie, and Nate, and much beer was gulleted! I got in for a HUGE discount by pretending to be the designated driver. I didn't drink as much as the others, but I did take large sips from their glasses whenever they brought over something new. By the end I was feeling nice & fuzzy. Later we retired to Joelle & Dave's for pizza, whiffleball, wine, and a horrific (and hopefully final) screening of "Battlefield Earth." Fun shit!

WV - Grandma Caroline's Memorial Service - 5/24/09 : I didn't use a flash for these, as there was a lot of light coming through the windows and the color looks a lot more natural. I basically just walked around and shot random photos, but I respectfully put the camera down while people were standing up and talking. There were some touching speeches and funny stories told all 'round. Unfortunately I didn't know Critter's grandmother, but I have a better understanding of what she was like and what she accomplished in her time. It was a lovely memorial, and I'm proud of Critter for arranging the whole thing so that everyone could come and enjoy it without worrying about all the little details.

Grandma Caroline - Family Photos : Christopher's grandmother passed away late last year, so he scanned a bunch of old family photos to show during her memorial service. I did some restoration on them by removing dust, repairing damaged areas, and correcting color. Some things couldn't be fixed, such as the graininess of the older color prints, but a lot of things were cleaned up pretty well. The photos can be downloaded and saved, and you can even order prints if you like (at NO profit to me!). Wupatki National Monument, AZ - 1/14/08 : The lighting was a little tricky for these photos, because the sun was going down and the shadows started taking on sort of a greenish hue. But these are the largest pueblo ruins in the area, dating back 800 years or so. The last 30 photos were from a smaller set of ruins a few miles away from the main complex, taken just as the sun was setting. It was easy to imagine people living there and seeing that beautiful sunset every evening.

Arizona Trip - 1/08 : Our post-Christmas trip to AZ was great...it's so nice to see the sun after so many rainy days in Seattle. We took some side-trips to Sunset Crater and Wupatki National Monument (pics are in a separate gallery), among other things. Also saw my first live javelina, I had only read about them in books when growing up there. It was a great time for photos out the plane window, though I didn't use my DSLR and now I'm kinda kicking myself for that...but they turned out all right. :)

Rothenburg ob der Tauber : On our way to Ulm we stopped to visit Rothenburg, a well-preserved little medieval town. The buildings look the same way they have for centuries (even the paint color) and it's quite the bustling tourist destination. I loved the old buildings and the sense of history there, especially the ancient city walls which were built around the 1300s. You can climb them and walk around the entire city.

Ulm & Neu-Ulm : We stayed in Neu-Ulm for a couple of days, and the night we ventured over the river to the Ulm Marktplatz for dinner, we noticed the entire area was completely empty. It was very unusual and we wondered what was going on, but eventually we figured out that a Euro Cup game was on. The next night we walked back over at night to see the Ulm Münster lit up, and we ran into a riot of celebration that freaked us out at first--apparently Germany had won a game. I still managed to get photos of the church, but everywhere around us people were going joyfully apeshit. It was fun to see. :)

Bern : Bern is a beautiful place, with its ancient Old City area that is mostly contained within the "loop" of the Aare River. We got there expecting to view a quaint medieval city center, but instead we found ourselves in the middle of a mob of 100,000+ Euro Cup fans who were there for a game. People from Holland and Romania were partying together in the streets, each wearing neon orange or yellow. It was a shock at first because we had no idea that Bern was going hosting a game during our visit, but we waded through it and I got some great photos of the chaos. It was fun watching them act so crazy yet civil, unlike U.S. sporting events where people get violent even when they win. Aside from this, during our 3-day stay we managed to see some gorgeous sights, most notably the Rose Garden and Gurten Park.

Füssen & Neuschwanstein Castle : While staying in Neu-Ulm we took a side-trip to Füssen to see the famous Neuschwanstein Castle (and its parent castle, Hohenschwangau). It was dark and rainy most of the time and they didn't allow photos during the castle tours, but I got some nice outside shots of the castles.

Freiberg : On the way back from Bern, we stopped in Freiberg to find a restroom and wander around a bit. It's a charming town, with a massive bright red cathedral and winding cobblestone streets. We strolled around the little marketplace and checked out the wares, grabbed a few snacks at a shop, then headed back to the car. We'd like to come back and explore a bit more someday.

Berlin : Our hotel in Berlin was in a Turkish-populated neighborhood in the Mitte (middle) area of the city. There were a lot of old Communist-era buildings around which was interesting. While there we saw a Kylie Minogue show (photos here) and a Cirque du Soleil show called Varekai, visited the Berlin Zoo, had some great food at Potsdamer Platz, walked around in a thunderstorm, traveled a lot by train and bus, and took a side trip to Potsdam to see the Sanssouci castles.

Berlin Zoo & Aquarium : We had a few hours before the Kylie show and thought the zoo would be fun, but it was so unbearably hot that we ended up heading right for the aquarium and spending most of our time in there, where it was dark and cool. I took a lot of photos of fish and lizards and other creatures, so that's mostly what this gallery is. The zoo is enormous and we barely saw any of it, so we'll be going back someday when it's a little cooler!

Sanssouci : During our 4-day stay in Berlin, we took a train to nearby Potsdam to see Sanssouci and the many castles found in Sanssouci Park. The sprawling park is dotted with huge castles, Greek statues, fruit and vegetable gardens, fancy fountains, and winding paths through beautiful green areas. This was originally built as the summer retreat for Prussian King Frederick the Great during the 1700s, simply for his pleasure as a place to enjoy art, music, and culture. It's such an enormous park that we walked around it for several hours and didn't manage to see everything. It's a beautiful place and well worth seeing.

Sing-A-Long Xanadu with Peaches Christ - 10/13/07 : Not many pics, and they're not very good because of the dim lighting, but the show itself was a blast. Peaches Christ came up to our sleepy, passive-aggressive city to present Sing-A-Long "Xanadu" at the Cinerama Theater. She handed out prizes for Olivia Newton-John lookalikes, and during the movie we laughed, sang, and shouted rude things at the screen. What more could one want? And really, "Xanadu" deserves it!

Leigh & Dell's Visit - 9/22/07 : Critter's friends from Australia came for a short visit during their trek through North America and beyond. Ohio & West VIrginia - 8/07 : We took a jaunt to Cincinnati, OH to attend a wedding reception for Critter's cousin, then drove down to Morgantown, WV to visit some of his friends and family. Before hitting WV we spent an entire day at the Kings Island amusement park, which was a total hoot. The scenery in WV was beautiful, though I didn't get a chance to shoot much of it except from the car window. Seattle Pride Parade 6/26/05 : This was Seattle's largest Pride parade ever, with 150,000 people showing up to watch. There were 180+ participating groups, which made for a l-o-n-g parade but one of the more interesting ones I've seen. Seattle's Pride parades are usually kind of dull, but even though it had the usual mindless radio stations, beer companies, and politicians, overall I think they put on a really good show and people seemed to enjoy themselves.

Underwater! : I finally got around to uploading these. At first they were very disappointing, being so grainy and washed-out, but it was my first experience with underwater photography and I was using a cheapo camera. Luckily Photoshop was able to remove a lot of the noise and scratches. They're hardly up to my usual standards, but they're kinda fun to see nevertheless. It makes me long to see those giant sea turtles again...

Wild Lily Ranch - 3/27/04 : As something fun for his birthday, Jimmy decided to rent a cabin at Wild Lily Ranch for a few of us (Jimmy, John, Kevin, Michael, and I) to share for the weekend. It's close to Stevens Pass, which has plenty of skiing, tubing, and other fun stuff in the snow. We got to climb around a little, and throw some snow around... Later at the cabin, we chilled out, mixed some drinks, watched some DVDs, then got into the hot tub (which shut off for the night only 10 minutes after we got in...grrrr). The cabin was very cozy, smaller than I expected but it had room for everyone (5 people) and our stuff.

Pride Parade - San Diego : San Diego's pride parades are quite different from Seattle's. They have the same thick-necked muscle tools and pretty boys shaking their asses on the floats, but there are a lot more interesting characters and community groups that attend. Seattle's seem to be 90% radio stations, beer companies, and politicians. They even got Margaret Cho for a Grand Marshal for this one, how cool is that?

Cyndi Lauper - Seattle (9/2/10) : Another incredible blues show! We were dead center, but much farther back than the Reno show, so I just zoomed in as much as I could with my lil' camera. Had to de-noise some of the shots quite a bit, but overall it wasn't too bad. Some of them look better as black and white due to the light and washed-out look of the colors, so I just stripped the color out. :)

Cyndi Lauper - Reno (8/28/10) : Cyndi rocked our socks off in Reno last weekend! Because of our distance from the stage and the often subdued lighting, some of the photos were pretty noisy with JPG artifacts so I had to clean them up a little...that's why some look a little "soft." I basically just wanted to get some decent shots, discreetly (unlike the jerks who were sticking their flashing cameras in her face--she gave them a scolding and they stopped).

David Byrne - Seattle (6/24/09) : Another fantastic show! Used my new camera to zoom in close from about 10 rows back, it worked pretty well. There were even some surprise special guests for his 2nd and 3rd encores... From the back of the theatre came the Extra Action Marching Band, visiting Seattle from San Francisco. They made their way right down the center aisle looking like a half-crazed wedding party, then joined Byrne on the stage for "Road to Nowhere" and "Burning Down the House." It was so bizarre and unexpected, and yet somehow perfect. I got this all on video, posted here (see Part 2).

Flight of the Conchords - Seattle (5/11/09) : I've been a fan of these guys for a couple of years now, and somehow our friend Gina scored front-row tickets. Their songs are not only witty but they're well-written to boot, and their silly banter and improv moments really complete the show. You simply cannot miss FoTC if they blow through your town. (Their show is also fantastic...you can grab it on DVD.) Naturally, the Paramount's security goons harassed anybody who pointed a camera at the stage, but I managed to squeeze off a few decent shots anyway.

Amy and I were wearing our Leslie shirts, and she loved hearing how people in Europe stared agog at my shirt and even recognized who she was a couple of times. And when Critter and Amy told her that they lived in the Midwest for several years, she said "Oh, so you know exactly what I'm talking about." Awesome.

David Byrne - Seattle (2/18/09) : Another fantastic show by one of my musical heroes. He's a class act, always sure to give his band credit and praise first even while the fans were screaming his name. The audience was typical of Seattle--politely enjoying it for the first half, then out of their seats and dancing in the aisles the second half. The biggest surprise was the "costume change" just before they laid into "Burning Down the House"--they all donned tutus, and somehow they looked like they meant business! He even had some somewhat comically emotive dancers which were interesting to watch. What a blast.

Madonna - Vancouver, BC (10/30/08) : Last time we saw Madonna in 2006 (Amsterdam), we were way up in the nosebleed seats...so we were really lucky to get a seat close to the catwalk for this show. She got in our faces and seemed to be enjoying herself, smiling and sassing it up quite a bit. I even gave her a double flip-off when she flipped us the bird towards the end. She also had an awesome laser lightshow and some giant cylindrical video screens. The crowd was loving it and we chatted with everyone around us, but unfortunately we were seated next to a couple of complete morons who fought with everyone around them: a homophobic douchebag and his whiny little girlfriend. Horrible people with hateful behavior. Luckily they weren't at their seats for most the show, but towards the end the guy almost got his ass kicked by a girl in a tight red dress who wasn't taking any more of his shit. Lucky for him, a couple of people held her back!

Tina Turner - Phoenix (10/24/08) : Tina kicked our asses! She's got amazing energy and voice for someone who will be turning 70 in a couple of years. It's probably my first and last Tina show and I'm glad I got to see her at least once. These are NOT my best photos, but it's the best I could do with my cellphone camera. The venue had lots of signs about cameras being prohibited, and everyone had to pass through metal detectors to get in, but somehow everyone else but me snuck in a camera. Next time I'll know better. :)

Cyndi Lauper - Seattle True Colors Show (7/1/08) : What a show! Our friend Nate surprised us by asking Cyndi's keyboardist Steve Gaboury if he could arrange a couple of all-access passes for us, which he kindly did. The venue had some restrictions on where/what I could shoot, but having a photo pass and a front-row seat made all the difference. Our VIP ticket also included meeting Cyndi (very briefly) backstage and having a photo taken, something Christopher has wanted to do all his life. After the show we met Steve backstage and chatted for a bit. He's a class act, genuinely friendly and quite the accomplished musician. He's played/toured with many of our favorite artists, so it was fun to chat with him about some of of his experiences (makes me wish I had stuck with my keyboards when I was younger). Thank you, Steve and Nate!!

The B-52s - Seattle True Colors Show (7/1/08) : The B-52s absolutely rocked our asses. I didn't think I would ever get the chance to see them play live, but there they were...and they didn't disappoint in the least. "Rock Lobster" was the first B-52s song I ever heard, and though they've performed it a bazillion times over the years, seeing them do it right in my face was one of the evening's highlights! It was also Fred's birthday so at the end of Cyndi's set she called him out to the front of the stage so we could all sing "Happy Birthday" to him (pics are at the end of the Cyndi gallery).

Joan Armatrading - Seattle True Colors Show (7/1/08) : I must admit that I'm not familiar with Joan Armatrading's music, but I enjoyed her performance nonetheless. By the applause it sounded like she had a lot of fans in the audience, but it wouldn't surprise me if she gained a bunch of new ones during this tour. I was figuring out my camera settings during her set so I didn't get a lot of great pictures, but there were a few nice ones.

Between Bands with Carson Kressley, Rosie O'Donnell, Cyndi Lauper - Seattle True Colors Show (7/1/08) : Carson Kressley was the emcee for the show, he kept us entertained during the band changes. He began to run out of jokes, though, and it was funny to watch him tread water a little. But he did a good job--he even made fun of Christopher's Hawaiian shirt (with pineapples on it) as we sat down. Rosie O'Donnell also came out to do some stand-up, and she was sharp and funny as always. At some point Cyndi came out to say hello and encourage us to vote for human rights/equality initiatives.

Kylie Minogue - Berlin (6/22/08) : This was our first Kylie show and she really impressed. Her sex-kitten persona is more believable and playful than, say, Madonna (though Madonna puts on a hell of a good show). Nice stage setup with light curtains and props like a giant disco skull (my favorite), and even the floor was lit up with designs but we couldn't see well past the "wall of tall" in front of us. Thank the gods for zoom!

Leslie Hall - Seattle (3/11/08) : I wasn't too close so I didn't get many photos, but the Midwest Diva's glitter-potion nevertheless spackled my donut from afar with its gemtastic gloriousness. I did take some decent video, though, and have uploaded those here. The first clip is a montage from various songs (plus some silly banter), and the second clip shows two gem-sweatered girls being anointed in one of Leslie's hilarious onstage ceremonies. The second girl really gets hip-butted hard, it was a hoot... Stomp once for Britney!!

Angélique Kidjo - Seattle (2/21/08) : A week after winning a Grammy for her latest album, Angélique came back to Seattle for another awesome show. The Moore Theatre security goons were complete jerkwads as always--one of them got in my face and shouted at me to put my camera down when a bunch of audience members got up on stage to dance with Angélique. If they have some weird legal reason for not wanting audience members photographed, that's fine...but he didn't have to be such a prick about it. Oh well, I got some good photos--including one of people onstage, which you can see towards the end. Ha. :) Also check out my video clips of the show on YouTube!

Jill Scott - Seattle (2/5/08) : I'm new to Jill Scott's music so I had no idea what to expect, but Critter is a huge fan and assured me I was in for a treat. He was right...the show was unbelievable! She has so much confidence and sweetness, and a smile that makes you want to smile right back. She was a class act from beginning to end (even when singing about gettin' nasty) and I'd jump to see her again. The pics are a bit grainy at times because I was using a pocket camera with the flash turned off to preserve the colors... Thankfully Photoshop can clean some of that up. :) I also posted 20 minutes of video on YouTube (see Part 1 and Part 2).

They Might Be Giants - Seattle (9/26/07) : Another kick-ass show by John & John, despite the gang of Moore Theatre killjoys who patrolled every aspect of our concertgoing experience. First we were frisked to death, then every 5 minutes we saw one of these guys harassing someone in the audience: Move your stuff further under your chair! Don't stand there! Move an inch to the left! Put that food away! They were truly the Enjoyment Police. But was a fantastic show as always, and they even wrapped up just under the Moore's ridiculous 11:00pm curvew. God I hate that venue now.

Bebel Gilberto - Seattle (9/10/07) : Bebel was fantastic, though these are hardly my best pictures. The club was dimly lit at best, which makes for some grainy shots, though I was able to do some noise reduction with Photoshop. They get a little better towards the end, though. :) And what's with people yakking incessantly throughout a show they paid $35 to see? We heard people yakking nonstop the entire show, and it was really irritating...luckily the music was good enough to drown most of it out.

True Colors Tour - Hollywood (6/30/07) : Another great show: The Cliks, The Dresden Dolls, Debbie Harry, Erasure, and Cyndi Lauper, with Margaret Cho entertaining between bands. Rosie O'Donnell showed up again as well. We enjoyed it more than Vegas...some of the sets seemed longer, the venue was far better (being outdoors), and we were seated a bit closer this time which makes for some better pics.

Jonatha Brooke - Seattle (6/16/07) : I last saw Jonatha at Bumbershoot in 2002 (gallery) and she was just as good this time around, maybe better. I love watching her sing, she always seems to be smiling...and her goofy quips and stories between songs are an entertaining contrast to the bittersweet nature of most of her music. She's surprisingly funny and irreverent, which I had almost forgotten about since seeing her last. The music was excellent and seemingly effortless...she's a class act and we both enjoyed the hell out of her show!

Angélique Kidjo - Seattle (5/4/07) : This was only my 2nd Angelique Kidjo show, but already she's one of my favorite performers. She's so full of energy and sassy wit, and she sings with such sincerity that I'm often transfixed... And it wouldn't be complete show until she's gotten most of the room up on their feet, with a group of them dancing with her onstage. At her shows there is only fun, good music, singing, dancing, and (without the slightest bit of sarcasm) love. Go see her if you get the chance!

Altan - Seattle (3/6/07) : Altan was the gateway to my discovery of the joys of Celtic music, and over 10 years later I'm still enjoying the hell out of it. I saw them play here in Seattle in 2000 and it was fantastic, and last night's show was even better--they are an amazingly talented group, full of wit and charm and fiery tunes. They even got some of the typically passive Seattle audience to get up and dance, which is always fun to see.

Dixie Chicks - Tacoma (2006) : We were sitting pretty far back and to the side, so the pics aren't stellar but here are the best ones. The camera's anti-shake and digital zoom worked together for some of the close-ups. Great show, but finding parking around the Tacoma Dome was hell! It may keep me from ever wanting to see a show there again. (Not to mention all the drunk people picking fights during the peace & love songs...WTF?)

Pet Shop Boys - Seattle (2006) : Our first PSB show! I didn't know what to expect. They had a cool illuminated sheer-walled folding box set-thing which transformed into various shapes during the show, its edges lit up with animated lights and other things. Very creative use of a simple setup. The music was crisp and well-done...Neil's got a good stage presence and was always sharply-dressed, which I liked. The dancers, however, were a bit annoying...especially the Harry Potter lookalike who tried so desperately to act ghetto. *snort* We were standing 10-15 rows/people from the stage, but my new pocket camera (purchased only 4 hours earlier) snapped some pretty good pics.

Brazilian Girls - Seattle (2006) : See this band if they come to your town...you won't be disappointed! None of them are Brazilian, and there's only one girl, but she sings in several languages and is fun to watch. Their music is a mix of electronic beats, rock, jazz, and some orgy-worthy grooves... At one point she pulled out a joint and lit up onstage, puffed a bit out over the crowd, then passed it around to the rest of the band. She then lit up another one and handed it down to the audience. Very ballsy...we loved it. Too bad the Moore Theatre's union workers shut down the show right at 11:00pm, only halfway thru their set! Bullshit.

Shooglenifty - Seattle (2006) : Another night at the Tractor Tavern, another of my favorite bands. First time I've seen this Scottish "trad-funk" group in the 10 years I've been a fan. Critter and I were blown away...their music is so full of energy and humor, and it's absolutely brilliant seeing it played live. They got everyone up and hopping around like crazy. Watching Angus play the fiddle reminded me a bit of Capt. Jack Sparrow...and his dry humor was perfect for this Pacific NW audience, everyone loved it.

Thomas Dolby - Seattle (2006) : I honestly never thought I'd get the chance, but last night Christopher and I saw Thomas Dolby perform at the Fenix here in Seattle. It was a great show of thumping music, fun sound and video technology, and Dolby's nice-guy wit and charm. It was easy to see how much he enjoys peforming...he's completely at home surrounded by his toys, but he also takes the time to step out of The Rig and chat a bit. The crowd was an interesting mix of young 'uns, older folks, a goth or two, some obvious 80's fans, and hyperexcited geeks. I'm a geek in many ways, but these folks were downright worshipful, and that was fun to see. Dolby is one of music's original geeks, and I'm thrilled to have seen him do his thing. (Sorry for the copy protection, but you know people are about stealing images...)

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy - Seattle (2006) : Jazz Alley, 2/24/06. I've loved their music for years, and finally I got to see them play... Critter and I loaded up on drinks and a swingin' time was had by all. The music was loud & brassy, the drums were crisp and thumpy, and the guys really seemed to be enjoying themselves despite having to do another show just a half hour after the one we saw. The bass player and Scotty (lead singer) were especially enjoying themselves, and I commented to Critter afterwards that it's nice to see musicians enjoy their work instead of acting bored (the vibe I got when seeing Cake last year). BBVD are a talented, energetic group and if you like swing jazz you'd be nuts to miss 'em.

Zap Mama - Seattle (2005) : We saw Zap Mama at the Triple Door on 9/15, and it was absolutely fantastic! She has a great stage presence, totally in control and enjoying herself...the way her voice, dancing, and gestures blend together was fun to see. The music was great, described in her bio as "somewhere between soul, gospel, pygmy song and Afro-Cuban rhythms." She even managed to get us up to shake our rumps during several numbers, even though we were stuffed with dinner and wine (the Triple Door is sort of a dinner-theater setting). I'm new to her music but I really enjoyed her and her show, so I'll be seeing her again when I can!

Mt. Rainier - July 2006 : We had room for up to 40 campers on this trip, but ended up with only five campers to share a MASSIVE campsite. It was actually kinda fun having all that room to ourselves. :) We basically just farted around, hiking from Reflection Lakes to Paradise (or most of the way) on Saturday.

Mt. Rainier - July 2005 : Another great trip! We didn't get to see much of the mountain until Saturday night because of clouds, but what a beautiful scene it was as the sun set that evening. This was the largest group we've had in quite a while, but there was plenty of room and more than enough alcohol, oh yes. Thank God someone brought that high-class Monarch vodka...I mean, that stuff's expensive but oh so smooth. :-)

Ocean Shores (Beach House) - February 2005 : Not camping, exactly...just some boozin', board gamin', beachin', eatin', hot tubbin', and dancin'. And speaking of dancin', we were all treated to a dance-off between Antknee and Heath, set to the dulcet tones (?) of Britney Spears and Madonna. They were judged on dance moves, wardrobe, wardrobe malfunction, etc. This is what happens when a bunch of homos and two straight girls converge for a weekend.

Ocean Shores - August 2004 : Well, this trip was more or less a bust because of the rain. Had a weird experience, though: I went down to the beach soon after the sun had gone down and the fog had started rolling in... Once I got away from the trees, I was totally blinded by the fog, seeing maybe 10-15 feet in any direction. Beyond that everything was just a blue mist but I could hear the sound of the ocean somewhere out there, it was like being alone on an alien planet. It was quite beautiful...or maybe it was just the alcohol kicking in. :) The next day, it started to rain and never really stopped. We waited for another hour or so, and eventually decided to pack up and get outta there.

Deception Pass - April 2004 : This was another trip where I didn't take too many photos...I was too busy freezing my ass off because I was sleeping alone in a giant tent! I obviously didn't know how to "dress" for sleeping in a cold tent, something I quickly learned after one night. :) James also took a few pics which are included here.

Ocean Shores (Beach House) - February 2004 : Once again the gang headed down to Ocean Shores for a weekend of non-campin', including drinkin', hot tubbin', kite flyin', readin', sleepin', dancin', and more drinkin'. On Sunday morning we had some excellent brekkie at the Shilo Inn down the road. For once, I didn't take a lot of photos during this trip...it was too cloudy & rainy for nice sunsets, and I was in the hot tub for 2-3 hours each night (which is totally good for you, of course). Anyway, James and Heath made up for it with lots of their own fun pics.

Mount Rainier - July 2003 : Wow, what a trip. It was a long, grueling drive on highways crowded with fleeing Seattleites (thanks to Jim for driving again), but once we got there we had a great weekend in the sun. Oh yes...lots of sun. And bugs, how could I forget the bugs?? We hiked around the Paradise trails, played in the snow a bit, threw a frisbee around, waded around in the creek, had a water balloon fight (which I managed to nap through), and certain nameless people even did a bit of nude sunbathing. Well, now! No bears or mountain lions, though I managed to get a picture of something...possibly a groundhog, I'm not exactly sure.

Jim's car went tits-up so we drove all the way back to Bellevue and rented a PT Cruiser. It added a couple of hours to our trip, but it was worth it! Ocean Shores (Beach House) - February 2003 : Once again the gang converged on Ocean Shores for a camping trip, except this time it wasn't really camping...it was more like a 16-person boozin' slumber party. Ocean Shores - May 2002 : This was my first camping with Anthony and his campin' buddies. There were 14 total this time around, and they're a fun and rowdy bunch. There was a lot of kite-flying, walking, sandcastle building, eating, alcohol guzzling, and napping. At night we slept to the sound of the waves on the beach and frogs (a relaxing combination, oddly enough).

1989 - Senior Year : The last year of hell! No, wait...it wasn't hell. These were the best friggin' years ever. I enjoyed my high school years a LOT, but I know a lot of people who said they hated it and were miserable. Every photographer seems to have a favorite photography quote, so here's mine: "We all experience it. Those moments when we gasp and say, 'Oh, look at that!' Maybe it's nothing more than the way a shadow glides across a face, but in that split second, when you realize something truly remarkable is happening and disappearing right in front of you, if you can pass a camera before your eye, you'll tear a piece of time out of the whole, and in a breath, rescue it and give it new meaning." Joel Meyerowitz said that, and I've never heard it put better.
